Samenvatting
Sepsis is a common cause and complication of an admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. In this thesis, the societal impact of sepsis and inflammation was estimated by exploring the clinical value of a novel diagnostic test for sepsis (SeptiCyte LAB™), calculating the economic burden of sepsis in the Netherlands, and investigating the occurrence and risk factors for its long-term consequences for perceived health of surviving patients. The studies in this thesis were performed using data from the Molecular Diagnosis and Risk Stratification of Sepsis (MARS) project, the Achmea Health Database, and survey data on long-term health outcomes.
