Connecting science to practice
We develop knowledge and concrete solutions to support nursing staff in improving the well-being of people with (imminent) health problems. We realize this through a combination of scientific research of the Master's in Nursing Science and nursing care in practice.
We work closely together with the Research Group Chronic Diseases and the Institute for Nursing Studies of University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and nurse scientists of universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands and abroad.
There are six research themes:
Quality and patient safety of nursing care - Chronic Cardiovascular Nursing Care - Aging & chronic conditions - Acute events & hospitalizations - Professional leadership - Healthcare innovation and technology
Quality And Safety Of Nursing Care uitklapper, klik om te openen
The research theme Quality and safety of nursing care is aimed at the development, evaluation and implementation of interventions for the improvement of nursing care, with interventions that improve patient participation as an area of special attention.
Coordinator: Prof. Dr L. (Lisette) Schoonhoven
Chronic Cardiovascular Nursing Care uitklapper, klik om te openen
In the research theme 'chronic cardiovascular care', we study optimal forms of care for patients with a chronic cardiovascular disease. On the research agenda are research questions about telehealth coaching and telemonitoring. In addition, research projects are set up for optimal interventions to improve the quality of life of patients and their loved ones. These are projects such as easing symptoms (e.g. thirst, depression) and promoting self-care through technology.
Coordinator: Prof. Dr T. (Tiny) Jaarsma
Aging & Chronic Conditions uitklapper, klik om te openen
We focus on the prevention of functional decline and adverse health outcomes of chronic disease patients and multi-morbidity elderly people who are living independently in the community. The focus is on proactive preventive and integrated district and primary care.Early warning helps to timely identify vulnerable elderly people, which is followed by a nursing care program.
We are also committed to promoting self-management (partly supported by eHealth) of chronic disease patients in the TASTE research theme.
Coordinator: Dr N. (Nienke) Bleijenberg
Acute Events uitklapper, klik om te openen
Acute events focuses on the optimization of recovery from debilitating conditions from two different perspectives:
1) the prevention or reduction of factors that impede recovery, such as psychosocial disorders
2) the promotion of independence in daily functioning.
Coordinator: Dr J.M (Janneke) de Man
Leadership uitklapper, klik om te openen
The research theme Professional leadership contributes to the knowledge and understanding of leadership among nurse scientists and nursing staff.
Coordinator: Dr T.B. (Thóra) Hafsteinsdóttir
Healthcare Innovation And Technology uitklapper, klik om te openen
This research theme is aimed specifically at the development and evaluation of complex healthcare innovations including new ICT solutions. We combine user-friendly techniques and scientific methodologies to acquire an understanding of the needs of people receiving healthcare. We also evaluate the interventions used.
Coordinator: Dr J.C.A. (Jaap) Trappenburg
Master's In Nursing Science uitklapper, klik om te openen
Continued high-quality care constantly requires new knowledge. Knowledge based on scientific research and its effective translation into healthcare practice. The Master's in Nursing Science realizes this by linking scientific insights to experiences from nursing practice.
Contacts for the Master's in Nursing Science are: Prof. Dr L. (Lisette) Schoonhoven and Dr J.M (Janneke) de Man.

Co-fit: recommendations for the protection of healthcare professionals
2 april 2020
How do we keep our healthcare professionals on and in the surroundings of the frontline mentally and physically healthy and deployable? Can we learn from earlier, similar outbreaks, like SARS, MERS and Ebola? Twelve researchers from nursing science, THINC. The Healthcare Innovation Center and the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Research Group Chronic Conditions locked themselves up for five days to research these questions.
Using a systematic review they identified and analyzed scientific literature on the mental and physical health of healthcare professionals during similar virus outbreaks. They amplified this knowledge with qualitative interviews held with experts. Next, they processed all of this into practical and easy to implement recommendations. These recommendations are combined in Co-fit; a rapport with substantiated and practical tools on how to maximally protect healthcare professionals against the tiring, stressful and emotional working conditions.
