Evidence-based medicine (EBM) means that, in the care of individual patients, physicians carefully weigh the best available evidence against the physician's expertise and the patient's wishes. General practice training currently pays a lot of attention to learning EBM skills, but we do not really know how these skills are applied in practice and how general practice trainers and postgraduate students learn them. This study seeks to clarify this. We hope to be able to apply this knowledge at a later stage to study how the use of and learning process concerning EBM can be reinforced and supported.
This study is being performed in collaboration with the general Practice Training program of Ghent University in Belgium. At both institutes, twelve duos of general practice trainers and postgraduate students will be asked to record as many consultations during a half day as possible. They will also be asked to record three random intervisions. These recorded consultations and intervisions will be watched and analyzed. In addition, two interviews will be held with each duo based on these recordings. Focus groups with experts will also be organized.
