RAPHAEL 7
This study is part of the RAPHAEL consortium, an EU-funded research project aimed at integrating palliative care for patients with heart failure. The objective is to provide an effective contribution and integration of social sciences and humanities in the RAPHAEL project to better understand and address issues related to ethics, inclusiveness and cultural sensitivity for patients with heart failure.

Increasing international migration is leading to more multicultural and ethnically diverse communities. As a result, healthcare professionals treating patients with heart failure are confronted with cultural differences. As the course of the disease is unique to each individual, health care professionals need to respond to the culturally determined values, preferences, and worldviews of patients and their families. In addition, minority populations are often subject to discrimination, socio-economic disadvantage, and inequitable access to optimal health care services. This highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity in the management of heart failure and the need to ensure that cultural competence is embedded in heart failure care practices.

A central task of this study is to engage in discussions with all other WPs on ethics and cultural differences throughout the project. We explore moral issues and challenges experienced in daily palliative care by people with heart failure, their family caregivers, healthcare professionals and researchers. Throughout the project we will reflect on cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness from an ethical point of view, meaning the ability to recognise, understand and respond appropriately to beliefs, values, norms and behaviours of persons who belong to a cultural or ethnic group.
